Slavica Djukic Dejanovic, Minister without portfolio who is in charge of demographics and population policy, and member of the Coordinating Body for Gender Equality, supported and signed the petition calling for the proclamation of May 18t^h as the Day of Remembrance of Murdered Women Victims of Violence. She signed the petition on the Republic Square in Belgrade, on November 9^th. Following the signing, the Minister met with Tanja Ignjatovic, from the Autonomous Women’s Center, and Aleksandra Nestorov, from the Women against Violence Network.

At the meeting they discussed the Birth Promotion Strategy from 2008 (the document this Ministry is founded on). Seeing as many women in Serbia are surviving male violence as well as employment discrimination, the Minister agreed with representatives of women’s organizations that encouraging motherhood should necessarily include the creation of a supportive environment for women in the family and at work. Ignjatovic and Nestorov emphasized, among other things, the importance of reducing the costs of raising a child, as well as introducing reproductive health programs (including sex education) into school curricula, as is stipulated by the Strategy. The Minister suggested that the Gender Equality Law should contain a whole section on preventing gender based violence.
