4 – 15/03/2013, New York: Representatives of Autonomous Women's Center participated at the 57th Session of the Commission on the Status of Women from 4th to 8th of March 2013 in the UN Headquarters in New York. Priority theme of the session was “Elimination and prevention of all forms of violence against women and girls”. AWC submitted Written Statement on the elimination and prevention of all forms of violence against women and girls in Serbia for the 57th session.
At the session, representatives of some UN member states have shown a tendency for re-opening of negotiations on the already established international agreements on women’s human rights. The discrimination and violence against women and girls are justified by customs, culture, religious and traditional practices. Because of these attitudes, outcome document of the session is uncertain and it is possible, as at the 56thsession, that it will not be adopted. Therefore, feminist and women's organizations and their networks sent a statements to all stakeholders for taking a firm stand in regard to the protection of women's right on life without any form of violence, without exception, in accordance with already established international agreements. Autonomous Women's Center signed the statements and will continue to monitor discussion and adoption of the final document of the session.
In addition to the main events and side events organized by the UN member states, there were numerous parallel events organized by women’s, feminist and experts NGOs covering the variety of topics relating to violence against women - from prevention, the situation of women in conflict areas, stereotypes, multiple marginalized groups of women, traditional practices - to the evidence and the use of modern technology for elimination of violence against women.
