On the occasion of the National Day of Remembrance for Women Victims of Violence, the Autonomous Women's Center (AWC) organized a press conference and a street action on Sunday, May 18, 2025, at Republic Square in Belgrade, in cooperation with Women in Black.

At the press conference, the latest data on femicide in Serbia were presented. Since the beginning of 2025, up until mid-May, eight women have been murdered. In at least four of these cases, the institutions had prior knowledge of the violence the women had reported. In 2024, 17 women were killed in family or intimate partner contexts, and in 13 of those cases, the perpetrators were their current or former partners. In eight cases, the violence had been previously reported, and at least three of the perpetrators had already been convicted of domestic violence or attempted murder.

According to data available on the Femicide Memorial platform, 423 women have been killed in Serbia in family or intimate partner contexts since 2011. Most of them were over the age of 46. The most dangerous place for a woman living in violence remains the shared home with her abuser.

The data presented by AWC confirms that reporting violence, rather than protecting women, often becomes an additional risk factor, as institutions fail to respond promptly and adequately.

The conference also highlighted the situation of underage children whose mothers were victims of femicide, as well as the challenges faced by relatives caring for them, including the lack of support and legal security for these families after the murder of a woman.

The Autonomous Women's Center once again called on relevant institutions to consistently implement the Law on Prevention of Domestic Violence, improve risk assessment and information sharing between institutions, establish a system of accountability in cases of failure, monitor perpetrators of serious crimes after serving prison sentences, and actively cooperate with women's organizations that provide support to women at risk.
