Why is a red handbag in the hands of 30 famous women a symbol of resistance to violence?

Konstrakta, Tanja Bošković, Tamara Dragićević, Bojana Vunturišević, Jelena Stupljanin, Sajsi and other brave women carry red handbags and invite companies and citizens to support the AWC Fund

The Autonomous Women's Center (AWC), an organization that has supported more than 30,000 women survivors of violence in its 30 years of existence, has launched a fundraising campaign for its Women's Emergency Support Fund - "Make What’s Hers Truly Hers Again".

It is a fund that AWC uses to pay urgent expenses for women who are in a situation of violence: medical examinations, court fees, emergency accommodation, free legal aid, food, hygiene or textbooks for children, payment of transportation costs for going to institutions, etc.

Women often do not have health insurance or it is desirable to be examined by a forensic medicine doctor (these examinations are charged), they do not have financial or sufficient financial resources to support minor children because their violent ex-partners refuse to pay alimony, they cannot pay for safe emergency accommodation in high-risk cases when they leave a violent partner, they do not have the means to pay court fees and other court costs when starting divorce proceedings and protection from domestic violence, etc.

The campaign "Make What’s Hers Truly Hers Again", as a sign of solidarity with the victims of violence, is supported by 30 prominent women from the public life of Serbia: actresses, athletes, musicians, journalists.

If you see some of them on social networks these days photographed with a red purse, with the slogan "Make What’s Hers Truly Hers Again", be reminded that that the red purse kept alive a woman who, once upon a time, won the battle for a life without violence.

In the interviews that AWC associates conducted with women who were victims of violence, the statement of one woman remained in our memory:

"I wanted to have a red purse all my life and I’ve bought a red purse."

When she started to live freely, she fulfilled her wish and bought a red purse. That's why the red handbag is the leitmotif of this campaign. It is worn with pride and love by 30 women, on behalf of all those who want it and those who never got it. As a symbol of hope and faith that a life without violence is possible for each of us.

At the beginning of this week, the campaign is also visible on billboards in Belgrade, Novi Sad, Niš, Subotica, Kragujevac, Kruševac, Čačak, Novi Pazar, Šabac, Leskovac, Smederevo and Kraljevo.

We invite companies to support the work of AWC with one-time donations, we invite citizens, who are able, to become our permanent donors with standing orders for amounts that will not burden their budget. If there are many of us who donate, even with small amounts, we will do a lot.

Support the AWC Fund for urgent support for women by making a direct payment through the website!

Share and follow our  Autonomous Women’s Center Instagram page  so as to let more people know about the fundraising campaign!
