Capacity Development Workshop for CSO Women Advocates to Commemorate
30th CEDAW Anniversary, 19 - 20 November 2009, Istanbul, Turkey
Autonomous women's center participated in two day workshop organized by
UNUFEM and Open Society Institute from Budapest. Workshop was organized
for women advocates from CEE/CIS region to commemorate 30th CEDAW
anniversary.
Two thematic areas were elaborated during the workshop: violence against
women and economic rights of women. Members of the CEDAW Committee
Dubravka Šimonović and Victoria Popescu and ex Committee member
professor Feride Acar were speakers but also have participated in
discussions during the workshop. All of the Committee members remind
participants that CEDAW Convention recognize that often one incident
violating women's human rights is not only isolated event, but also
giving a wider picture of discrimination against women and that it is
connected with other discriminations and consequential from patriarchy.
Objective of this workshop was to bring together activists from the
region to exchange experience and find solutions and common propositions
for advocacy on rights of women survivors of male violence, as for
improvement of economic equality between women and men. During the
workshop CEDAW Committee member as well as participants from
International Women's Rights Action Watch Asia Pacific and Interights
pointed out on importance of strategic litigation of women whose rights
were violated trough the use of Optional Protocol but also at The
European Court for Human Rights.
