Advocacy

Initial premise of the Autonomous Women's Center is that policies, in order to fight against violence against women, at the local and national level should be consistent with international standards and good practices in this field. In accordance with the strategic goals, that the Convention of the United Nations and the Council of Europe should be implemented well by the state and that in the process of joining the European Union we must respect the human rights of women, Autonomous Women's Center consistently monitors the implementation of and advocates for a comprehensive, coherent, relevant, specific, efficient and effective national policies against violence against women.

"There is no apology to the victims and families, no compensation, no personal nor professional responsibility", said the representative of the Autonomous Women's Center, Tanja Ignjatović, during the press conference organized by the Ombudsperson on the occasion of the presentation of failures found in the work of relevant institutions in 12 out of 14 cases of killings of women in Serbia. According to the Special report of the Ombudsperson, in these 12 cases, including mass murder in Zitiste, it was found that the institutions had knowledge of the existence of violence against women in the family, but they did not not react properly or didn't act at all.

Tanja Ignjatovic said that the Report of the Ombudsperson points to a deep, systemic problem. "Since the failures in specific cases are not analyzed, we don't even know that they exist. Therefore, they are repeated and will be repeated in the future", she said. She announced that Women Against Violence Network will, together with citizens, address a petition to the Government of RS to declare May 18th as the Day of Remembrance of the murdered women victims of violence. She ended the speech with a note that AWC is considering addressing the UN CEDAW Committee lawsuit against the state, based on data from the report of the Ombudsperson.
